Why Freeze Dried?
Benefits of Freeze-Dried Food
1. Excellent Nutrient Retention
Minimal nutrient loss: The freeze-drying process removes water at low temperatures under vacuum, preserving heat-sensitive nutrients (e.g. vitamins, minerals, amino acids).
Maintains bioavailability: Nutrients remain close to their natural state, supporting better digestibility and absorption compared to cooked or extruded foods.
2. Maintains Natural Flavour and Aroma
High palatability: The process preserves volatile flavour compounds, making it appealing to fussy eaters.
Minimal processing taste: Retains more of the raw food’s natural odour and taste profile.
3. Long Shelf Life
Extended storage stability: With moisture removed, microbial growth and spoilage are greatly reduced.
No need for preservatives: Shelf life can exceed 1–2 years when stored properly in airtight packaging.
4. Lightweight and Convenient
Low weight and volume: Ideal for travel, emergencies, and storage.
Rehydrates quickly: Can be reconstituted with water to restore original texture and palatability.
Freeze Dried Food Care
If freeze dried food is stored incorrectly, microorganisms can grow.
When possible, opt for smaller sized bags of freeze-dried food to minimize the time an opened bag is stored and reduce the risk of spoilage. For example buying 2 small bags instead of a large bag of our seasonal vegetable chop for a cockatiel or small parrot.
Check freeze dried food for any changes in appearance, smell or texture before serving. Any changes indicate spoilage and the food should not be given to your bird.
Rehydrate one serving in a clean bowl with cold water only.
Serve fresh daily. Ideally discard dry or wet freeze dried food after 4 hours of serving, to reduce likelihood of ingestion of spoilt food.
Store food in original bag only. Squeeze air out and seal bag tightly after each use.
If packaging has been left unsealed for long periods, the freeze dried food should be discarded.
Do not refrigerate. Keep bag contents as dry as possible. Store bag in a cool, dry place.
